Employment Trends

In the past ten years there has been a small growth in total employment.

Last Updated 2012

Why is this important?
Job gains or losses measure regional economic vitality. This chart shows annual average total employment on Long Island during the past ten years.

How are we doing?
In 2010, preliminary data indicated that total employment on Long Island increased less than one percent over the previous year, stabilizing from the dramatic losses in 2009.  Relative to 2001, employment in the region was one percent higher in 2010.  By contrast, in New York State and the United States, employment fell below 2001 levels in 2009.  New York State employment stabilized in 2010 while losses slowed nationwide.
