What Happens When We Run Out of Land?
Except for a dwindling area in eastern Suffolk, most land is covered by residential homes, office parks, shopping districts, industrial uses or highways. As a result, the era in which Long Island could grow its economy and population by building on green, undeveloped land is coming to an end.
Where Do We Grow from Here? Land Use on Long Island
This survey, commissioned by the Rauch Foundation, focuses on regional attitudes toward severe housing problems, support for affordable housing policies and open space preservation. Seventy-four percent of Long Islanders view the lack of affordable housing as one of the most serious problems facing the region.
Land Use in Nassau and Suffolk Counties
An analysis of the breakdown by acreage and percentage for Nassau and Suffolk counties is provided with insights into the development patterns that constitute the built environment. The material is presented in graphic form, and shows the contrast that has occurred from 1980 to 2000. It has been updated to the present, in terms of land use development, according to building permits issued since 2000.
