Race and Ethnicity
Last Updated 2012
The racial and ethnic composition of Long Island schools is also noteworthy as Long Island remains one of the most residentially segregated areas of the United States. As the top panel of the chart indicates, Long Island schools are, on average, 65% White, 28% Black and Latino, and 6% Asian. Disaggregating race/ethnicity by school poverty reveals important patterns. The lower panel of the chart shows that Black- and Latino Americans are massively over represented in high poverty schools—these two categories comprise a full 90% of the population of high poverty schools. Conversely, whites are massively underrepresented in poor schools, comprising only 8% of the student body.
