The Burden of High Housing Costs

Despite of lower rents and home sales prices, Long Island residents still have high housing cost burdens. More than one third of Long Island households spent 35% or more of their incomes on housing cost in 2010. Young Long Island householders aged between 25 and 34 had the highest housing cost burdens compared to the same age group living in other parts of the region. Two out five of them spent more than 35% of their incomes on housing.
Long Island also is the least affordable place for renters compared to other parts of the region. Nearly half of its households who rented the units spent more than 35% income on housing in 2010.
