The Long Island Index, a project of the Rauch Foundation, announced today that it has expanded its interactive map of special district service providers on Long Island to include Suffolk County; the Nassau County segment of the map was unveiled earlier this year.

he Long Island Index, in collaboration with the Center for Urban Research at the CUNY Graduate Center, launched a new tool on its website (www.longislandindexmaps.org) that for the first time provides public access to maps representing the profusion of special districts that exist within Nassau County’s villages and towns.

Today the Long Island Index released a new study, Inter-District and Intra-District Segregation on Long Island. The study was conducted by Professor Douglas Ready from Teachers College at Columbia University.

Long Island has the necessary assets which if properly managed could redefine the region into a major economic and innovation powerhouse.

Poll after poll has shown that Long Island residents are worried about the lack of affordable housing and the exodus of young people from the region.

he Long Island Index, in collaboration with the CUNY Mapping Service at the Center for Urban Research, CUNY Graduate Center, has developed a new map layer on its website (www.longislandindexmaps.org) that details coastal storm impact zones and areas on Long Island likely to be impacted by Hurricane Irene of different wind strengths (category 1-4).

In partnership with Sustainable Long Island, the Long Island Index has released an interactive food access map detailing the existing food retail environment across Long Island.

The Long Island Index 2011 report, Getting It Done: Aligning Long Island’s Development Processes with Sustainable Economic Growth, prepared by the Regional Plan Association (RPA), shows Long Island, like many suburban areas across the country, is grappling with the difficult challenge of maintaining its high quality lifestyle while adapting to new economic, demographic and environmental realities.

The Long Island Index announced the launch of its redesigned website www.longislandindex.org which was in development for more than a year-and-a-half.

The dream that drove the development of Long Island is no longer viable. The Long Island Index developed the “Build a Better Burb” Ideas Competition for Retrofitting Long Island’s Downtowns to attract bold new ideas to address some of the most important problems facing the region including; loss of young people, low paying jobs and the increasing unaffordability of the region.

Suburban New York isn’t nearly as built out as it seems. As the Long Island Index 2010 “Places to Grow” report showed, there is acre after acre of opportunity to do a better job of building on Long Island.
